No dia 1 de novembro de 1755, no momento em que a terra tremeu, Sebastião estava como tantos outros na Missa de Todos-os-Santos. No meio do caos de Lisboa, o seu casaco carmesim, outrora símbolo de luxo, ficou coberto pela poeira da destruição enquanto ele coordenava o socorro junto ao Tejo. O fidalgo elegante veio a tornar-se braço direito do Marquês de Pombal, ajudando a erguer a nova Baixa pombalina. 

On November 1, 1755, the moment the earth shook, Sebastião was, like so many others, at All Saints' Day Mass. Amidst the chaos of Lisbon, his crimson coat, once a symbol of luxury, became covered in the dust of destruction as he coordinated relief efforts by the Tagus River. The elegant nobleman eventually became the right-hand man of the Marquis of Pombal, helping to raise the new Pombaline Lower Town.
